Statue of Unity

The World's Tallest Statue — 182 Metres of Iron Will, Sardar Patel's Legacy Rising from the Narmada

The Statue of Unity at Kevadia, Narmada district, Gujarat, is the world's tallest statue at 182 metres (597 ft) — nearly double the height of the Statue of Liberty — depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India who unified 562 princely states into the Indian Union. Built on Sadhu Bet island on the Narmada River directly facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam, it was inaugurated on October 31, 2018 (Patel's 143rd birth anniversary) and was designed by sculptor Ram V. Sutar and constructed by Larsen & Toubro in just 33 months.

A Glimpse into the History of the Statue of Unity

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — The Iron Man of India

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950) was India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, and the architect of India's political integration — he personally negotiated with 562 princely states and persuaded or pressured all but Hyderabad, Junagadh, and Kashmir to join the Indian Union within months of Independence. Without Patel's diplomatic and administrative effort in 1947–48, India would have fragmented into dozens of independent kingdoms. His achievement is considered the greatest act of post-colonial state-building in world history by scope.

Conception & Construction (2010–2018)

The project was announced in 2010 by then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as part of a national tribute to Patel, who had long been overshadowed in official commemoration by Nehru. L&T won the construction contract worth ₹2,989 crore; the bronze cladding used approximately 1,850 tonnes of bronze panels, with the iron core sourced partly from a "Run for Unity" campaign that collected farming tools from farmers across India — referencing Patel's rural roots. The 33-month construction timeline (2015–2018) is considered one of the fastest completions for a structure of this scale.

Inauguration & Kevadia Tourism Development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Statue of Unity on October 31, 2018, Patel's 143rd birth anniversary — a date now observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) across India. Post-inauguration, the Gujarat government developed the surrounding Kevadia area into a comprehensive tourism zone including the Valley of Flowers, a Jungle Safari, a tent city resort, a Cactus Garden, Children's Nutrition Park, and the Khalvani Eco Tourism Camp — transforming a remote dam-site village into one of Gujarat's primary tourism destinations.

Significance of the Statue of Unity

At 182 metres, the Statue of Unity is taller than the Spring Temple Buddha (153 m, China) previously the world's tallest, and 2.5 times the height of the Statue of Liberty (93 m including pedestal). The viewing gallery at 153 metres accommodates up to 200 visitors simultaneously — from it, the entire Sardar Sarovar Dam reservoir and the surrounding Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary treetop canopy are simultaneously visible. The statue's height of 182 metres was deliberately chosen to reference 182 — the number of assembly constituencies in Gujarat — giving it a symbolic dimension beyond size alone.

Events & Commemorations

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas — October 31

Sardar Patel's birth anniversary (October 31) is observed as National Unity Day at the Statue of Unity — the largest annual gathering at the site, with cultural performances, floral tributes, and government ceremonies at the base plaza. In 2023, the event drew over 15,000 visitors in a single day. The "Run for Unity" marathon also takes place across India on this date simultaneously.

Valley of Flowers Festival (July–November Monsoon Season)

The 17-hectare Valley of Flowers garden at Kevadia — planted with over 100 species of flowering plants — peaks between July and November when monsoon rains trigger full bloom. The Gujarat Tourism Department organises special monsoon weekend events at the valley during this period, including guided botanical walks and photography competitions, making the usually quieter monsoon period a draw for nature visitors.

153 Metres Up — A View That Fits 200 People

The Statue of Unity's chest-level viewing gallery at 153 metres is the highest public observation deck attached to a statue anywhere in the world. On clear days (October–February), the Sardar Sarovar Dam wall is visible stretching 1.2 km across the Narmada below, the forested hills of Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary extend to the horizon, and the Narmada River can be traced upstream into the Satpura ranges of Madhya Pradesh. Tickets for the gallery are separate from the base-area entry and are timed — book the earliest morning slot (9 AM) before midday haze reduces visibility.

Travel Guide to Statue of Unity

How to Reach Statue of Unity

By Air: Vadodara Airport (BDQ) ~90 km (~1.5 hrs) is the closest airport with regular commercial flights from Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad. Surat Airport (STV) ~130 km is an alternative. From BDQ, taxis to Kevadia cost ₹1,500–2,000.

A dedicated Statue of Unity tourist train (Jan Shatabdi express variant) runs from Vadodara to Kevadia on select days. Bharuch Railway Station (BH) ~52 km is closer but has fewer express train options.

By Road: From Vadodara ~90 km via NH-48 and SH-11; well-signposted route via Rajpipla. From Ahmedabad ~195 km via NH-48. GSRTC runs direct buses from Vadodara and Rajpipla to Kevadia. Entry to the Statue complex is by e-ticket only — physical tickets available at the gate or via the official Statue of Unity website.

Best Time to Visit

Oct–Feb (Best): Ideal weather (18–30°C), post-monsoon greenery at maximum, visibility from the gallery excellent — October 31 (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is the most crowded single day of the year, book 2 weeks in advance. Jul–Sep (Monsoon): Valley of Flowers is in full bloom, the Narmada River at Sardar Sarovar is full — significantly more scenic but access can be restricted during heavy rainfall; viewing gallery closes in low-visibility conditions. Mar–Jun (Summer): Hot (30–42°C), thinner crowds and lower hotel prices at Tent City; early morning visits (9 AM gallery slot) before the heat peaks are manageable.

Local Attractions

Sardar Sarovar Dam (~3.5 km): One of India's largest dams — 1.2 km wide across the Narmada; the dam-top viewing point and the reservoir are part of the Kevadia complex ticket.

Valley of Flowers (~1 km from base): 17-hectare ornamental garden with 100+ species, directly adjacent to the statue complex — included in the Kevadia area ticket.

Jungle Safari Kevadia (~2 km): Government-run safari zone in the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary buffer — leopard, crocodile, and exotic bird sightings reported regularly.

Zarwani Waterfall (~24 km): A 30-metre monsoon waterfall inside Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary, accessible by a forest road — spectacular July–September.

Tips for Visitors

Pre-book all tickets online at the Statue of Unity official website — especially the viewing gallery (153 m) ticket, which has limited timed slots. Walk-in gallery tickets often sell out by 11 AM on weekends and holidays. Entry + gallery combo ticket ~₹380 adults.
Wear comfortable shoes — the base complex covers approximately 2 km of walking between the main statue, the Sardar Sarovar Dam viewpoint, museum, and Valley of Flowers. Electric golf carts are available but run on fixed routes with limited coverage.
Stay at Tent City Narmada (Gujarat Tourism) inside Kevadia — the only accommodation within the complex. 120 Swiss tents with AC, directly on the Narmada riverbank. Prices from ₹5,000/night (off-season) to ₹12,000/night (peak). Book via the Gujarat Tourism website 2–3 weeks ahead for peak season.
Best photography of the statue from ground level is from the Sardar Sarovar Dam wall (approx. 500 m east) at sunset — the statue faces west, so evening light illuminates the front face directly. The "floating" misty appearance on monsoon mornings (8–10 AM) is the most dramatic visual.
